To sail the Mediterranean is to step back in time.  The historic ports that line the Mediterranean and Aegean seas are as old as civilization itself, and names like Athens, Ephesus and Rhodes conjure up images of ancient temples and civilisations. And in order to properly explore this fascinating region of the world, SeaDream Yacht Club has taken the wraps off an exciting voyage aboard SeaDream II that calls on some of the most important ports of Greece and Turkey.

Departing June 30, 2012, this eight-day voyage begins in Istanbul, Turkey. Once the capital of the Roman Empire, Istanbul has been known throughout its history as both Byzantium and Constantinople, and today it remains the largest city in the country with over nine million residents.

As the voyage progresses, guests aboard the SeaDream II will be fortunate to visit more off-the-beaten-path ports like Dikili, Turkey where visitors can tour Hadrian’s Temple of Trajan and the famous Red Basillica, built in order to honour the gods of Egypt.

Another unique feature of this itinerary is surely the overnight stay in the Turkish port of Kusadasi, gateway to the historic city of Ephesus.  Home to the ruins of ancient amphitheatres, roads, and even remarkably well-preserved latrines, the crown jewel of Ephesus is the astonishing facade of the Library of Celsus, which was completed in 135AD and intended to hold up to 12,000 scrolls.  Normally, guests would only have time to experience this historic city or amble around the port of Kusadasi but thanks to SeaDream II‘s extended port call, it’s possible to take in the night life of this burgeoning resort town.

Of course, few things beat sailing aboard the intimate ships of the SeaDream Yacht Club, where you can even elect to sleep out on deck, under the stars, in one of the line’s comfortable Balinese beds.  It’s a delightfully old-world feature the line has thoughtfully added to their modern, luxurious ships that leave passengers to want for nothing.  Few details have been overlooked here, and the ships’ low passenger counts ensure that there’s always a quiet corner or free deck chair waiting just for you.

Coupled with some of the most impressive sights east of Rome, this is a sailing that’s tough to pass up!
