It’s official: after a single year hiatus, Disney Wonder will return to Vancouver, British Columbia as the homeport for her 2013 Alaska season.

After entering the Alaskan cruise market for the first time in 2011 out of Vancouver, Disney Cruise Line announced they would switch homeports in 2012, opting to base Disney Wonder across the border in Seattle, Washington. But Disney guests rated Vancouver glowingly despite the relatively higher cost of airfare to “Hollywood North”, and Disney reportedly felt they coud squeeze more “wow” factor out of a weeklong itinerary operated from the popular Canadian port.

As a cruiser, I’m thrilled to see Disney offering a continued commitment to Alaska as a viable family cruise destination, but I am thrilled they will call my fair city home next year. But regardless of which port Disney Wonder operates her turnarounds from, the entire West Coast stands to benefit as she repositions up the coast and summers in the popular ports of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan.

Disney also announced that they will offer sailings from Miami for the first time ever, following the scrapping of Disney Wonder‘s itineraries to the trouble-plagued Mexican Riviera. Kicking off on December 23, the colourful city of Miami will play host to the sleek black and white-hulled ship for the winter season as she operates a series of Caribbean departures.  Interestingly, Miami is only the second Florida port of embarkation offered by the line, which has historically used Port Canaveral near Orlando as its homebase.

For Disney, it’s all about providing their passengers with more variety – and more options.
