Since her debut in 1999, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’s Europa has consistently been awarded the highest possible ranking by the Berlitz Complete Guide to Cruising & Cruise Ships, earning her some bragging rights as one of the best cruise ships afloat.

Keen to continue to keep that prestigious moniker, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises recently invested millions of Euros in a makeover that has resulted in a completely new look for the luxury vessel.

Over 650 specialists came together at a German shipyard to install some 5,200 square feet of carpeting, 1,000 square feet of new Bolitdeck surfacing, and the complete overhaul of 156 of its 204 suites.

These suites on  decks 5, 6, 7 and 9 were given new carpeting, soft furnishings and wall treatments that resulted in a fresh, bold new look for the line, and one that reflects some of the contemporary styling found aboard their new flagship, Europa 2.

Four Spa Suites located on Deck 7 also received a makeover, with vibrant new fixtures, furniture and a new colour scheme. Even the passenger staircases aboard Europa were outfitted with new carpeting pattered based on an original design exclusive to Hapag Lloyd Cruises.

On Decks 8 and 9, Europa’s popular pool area – already one of the most attractive at sea – was also given a total makeover, with a new colour scheme, carpet islands and contemporary lounge furniture. The pool area also received a complete lighting upgrade that includes floating lights for an innovative nighttime experience.

The line is also mindful of its more casual guests, launching a special late breakfast service in the ship’s Restaurant Dieter Müller. The restaurant will feature breakfast specialties and daily recommendations created specifically by Mr. Müller.

Europa set sail on her first journey following her drydock, a voyage to France and Spain including port calls in Brest, Nantes and Bilbao. While Europa 2 caters to bilingual guests, Europa caters to a mainly German-speaking clientele, though dual English and German language voyages are still offered aboard this one-of-a-kind vessel.

As an aside, did you know her fleetmate Europa 2 plays some swanky sail-away music upon departure? Have a listen to it here!
