We’ve written in the past about the documentation packages that cruise lines send out prior to embarking on your voyage. It’s a rather interesting topic, because not all documentation is created equal. Some cruise lines rely on an online booking engine similar to those used by many airlines to issue ‘print-at-home’ boarding passes and luggage tags, while other lines may send very elaborate pre-cruise packages.

One of our favorite lines for pre-cruise documentation has always been ultra-luxury line Silversea. The package they send out to guests is nothing short of wonderful: a leather folder containing leather luggage tags, pre-cruise information, a personalized boarding pass, and air, hotel and transfer information is sent in a large silver box bearing the “Silversea” typeface logo.

The leather travel wallet is one of the best we’ve ever seen; in fact, we wrote about its usefulness as a travel organizer last year. But there was always one major problem with the documentation: it was cluttered with numerous silver folders which, while pretty, became items to toss after every voyage.

In honour of the line’s 20th Anniversary this year, Silversea has made some interesting changes to their documentation. Earlier this month, they announced a totally new look and feel to their pre-cruise documentation package: instead of a leather travel folder, guests now receive a personalized booklet the line is calling a “Travel Journal.”

Still arriving in a silver box with the Silversea typeface on it, the Travel Journal contains the cruise ticket for your voyage, air information and transfers (if they were arranged by Silversea), a personalized itinerary for your voyage, and details on shore excursion and land adventures.

While I’ll miss my leather Silversea organizer, I won’t miss the plethora of documentation that came with it. Plus, having it all in one place seems kind of classy – much line the line itself.

Kristian Anderson, Silversea’s senior vice president of sales and general manager for North America, explained the new change: “Our elegant new Travel Journal is unique to each guest and provides all the essential information needed for the voyage — all in one convenient place. And, it’s a beautiful keepsake of what we are sure will be a remarkable travel experience.”

Silversea’s not alone in offering voyage information in a personalized booklet form; river cruise lines like AmaWaterways and Viking Rivers have found this to be a highly-effective strategy for delivering information to guests and making it a bit of a keepsake at the same time. Adventure Canada even recently wowed us with their informative booklets for our upcoming voyage later this summer.

In this age of print-it-yourself documentation, it’s nice to see some lines are still actively putting effort into developing and refining their pre-cruise documentation.
