It’s no secret that Silversea’s ultra-luxurious Silver Spirit is one of my favorite cruise ships. From the moment I first set foot aboard her back in late 2010, her soothing décor, gracious service and convivial atmosphere made me feel right at home.

Now, four years after my last voyage on her, I’m headed back to Silver Spirit, joining her in Barcelona for a taste of the Silversea I know and love – and for a look at what’s new in advance of the launch of the Silver Muse next spring.

A Winning Itinerary

Voyage 5609 will take us from the beautiful city of Barcelona, Spain on April 26,2016 to Civitavecchia, Italy – the port for Rome – where the elegant Silver Spirit will dock on May 2. In between is a cornucopia of ports that line the French and Italian Riviera.

At just six days in length, Silversea has managed to pack some real gems into this quick voyage. Obscure and off-the-beaten path, these are the ports of call that big ships typically sail right past. But carrying just 540 guests, Silver Spirit is perfectly suited to these types of locales. Still, the itinerary has a mix of “big-name” ports of call, too, ensuring that cities like Monte Carlo and Rome aren’t missed.

From Barcelona, Voyage 5609 takes us first to Sete, France, where we’ll journey on an overland excursion to the ancient, fortified town of Carcassonne. From Sete, it’s off to Sanary, France; Monte Carlo, Monaco; Livorno, Italy and Olbia, Italy before our final arrival into Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy.

From Monte Carlo, we’ll be touring the seaside town of Eze and the beautiful city of Nice on a half-day excursion with Silversea. In Livorno, we’ll set out on a full-day sightseeing tour of one of my favorite places of all-time: the grand city of Florence, Italy.

As nice as these ports of call are, they’re really only half the story. Selfishly, the real destination for me is the Silver Spirit.

The Silver Spirit

If I ran a cruise line, the ship I’d design would look a heck of a lot like the Silver Spirit. At 642 feet in length, she carries just 540 guests and a crew of 376. Despite the fact that she is by far the largest ship in the Silversea fleet (until the slightly-larger Silver Muse comes out next year), she boasts the same feeling of spaciousness that her smaller fleetmates have.

To that end, you will never have to fight for a deck chair by the pool aboard Silver Spirit. Nor will you have to duke it out for seating in any of the lounges, the bars, the show room, or the ship’s multiple dining venues. In fact, you’ll spend a lot of time wondering just where the heck everyone is; the ship disperses her guests that well.
