Taking a Closer Look at Silversea’s Silver Shadow

I remember the first time I stepped aboard Silversea ‘s Silver Shadow. It was in Vancouver, and I boarded her on a rainy day back in June of 2010 for a quick tour and lunch onboard. I still worked in the animation industry back then, and I had to create a “doctor’s appointment” in order to get the time off work to go see her. I changed into a suit and tie in the backseat of my car in a shifty-looking parking lot across from my Gastown offices, and snuck over to Canada Place for 90 minutes onboard. If my former employers are reading this…sorry. It was worth it.

Six years later, I still remember that day vividly. I’d never seen such an elegant, understated ship. Nothing about Silver Shadow – or any Silversea ship, for that matter – will hit you in the face and make you go, “wow!” Instead of ultra-modern décor or grand, sweeping public spaces, Silversea focuses on timeless elegance throughout its fleet.

It’s a strategy that has worked well for the luxury line. Six years after my first tour, and sixteen years after Silver Shadow entered service, the ship still exudes a warmth that is missing from many newer ships I sail on. Perhaps it is this reason that her and her sister Silver Whisper have become fast favorites among Silversea’s past guests.

Today, as we sail the vast and endless sea en-route to our next port of call in Langkawi, Malaysia, I want to take you on an updated Photo Tour of the elegant and gracious Silver Shadow:

On the day of my first few minutes aboard Silver Shadow six years ago, I saw a woman – a passenger – break down and cry tears of happiness when she saw a crew member. They’d known each other for years apparently, and six years later, I understand that feeling. There are crew members here, right now, that I can recall sailing with aboard Silver Spirit six years ago. Or on Silver Explorer four years ago. Or Silver Wind last year.

The ship is just a part of the equation that makes Silversea so special. It is the line’s dedicated, friendly, hardworking and exacting crew that make it truly shine. The carpets and panelling and décor may have changed in the intervening six years, but that feeling of family – of being at home away from home – is alive and well here today.
