This week, Silversea’s elegant 382-guest Silver Whisper is setting out on her 2017 World Cruise. Over the course of 116 days, she’ll sail from San Francisco to Monte Carlo, where she’ll arrive on May 3, 2017 – in time for guests to hang around for the Monaco Grand Prix, if they wish to.

Silver Whisper isn’t Silversea’s newest ship, but she is one of the line’s most well-loved. It is perhaps because of her stellar following that Silversea has placed her in charge of the company’s most prestigious journey year after year.

In December, I caught up with Silver Whisper in Port Everglades, Florida just after her drydock at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas. Hopping onboard for a quick tour in the afternoon, I was impressed with what I saw: a classic ship that has been given a smart-looking refresh that has touched nearly every corner of the ship.

Unlike many refits these days, the details aboard Silver Whisper are subtle. You’ve got to really look for them to notice the work that was done over seven frantic days – or, as Silversea’s President of the Americas Mark Conroy told me, “twelve days of work crammed into seven.”

What’s nice about this refit is that it has kept the warm look and feel of the Silver Whisper and modified it with modest changes. Sweeping refits are great, but they can sometimes change the look and feel of a ship – and not always for the better. With this latest “refresher” of the Silver Whisper’s décor, the areas of focus have been on taking the ship’s best features and accentuating them.

“Our goal with this refurbishment was to refresh Silver Whisper‘s signature style and honor her superb legacy of hosting our iconic world cruises by revitalizing the onboard experience for our guests,” said Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s CEO. “Silver Whisper’s enhancements are a perfect complement to the superior level of personalized service and warm hospitality that our guests receive on every voyage, whether it’s a seven-day Mediterranean sailing or an around-the-world adventure.”

The refit is part of Silversea’s US$170-million commitment to refurbishing its existing fleet of classic and luxury expedition ships. The largest such undertaking in the history of the line, both Silver Discoverer and Silver Wind have already received their own makeovers, while Silver Cloud is slated for the most dramatic makeover of all this fall, when she is converted into an ice-strengthened luxury expedition ship capable of carrying between just 200 and 260 guests.

Aboard Silver Whisper, one of the most immediately noticeable enhancements was the removal of the synthetic green astroturf decking and replacing it with new, ocean-blue decking.

Other enhancements found throughout the ship include new carpeting in all suites and rejuvenated flooring in the ship’s Restaurant, La Terrazza, the Panorama Lounge, Connoisseur’s Corner, and the Spa at Silversea. La Terrazza and The Restaurant all benefitted from newly-upholstered chairs, done in a new soft rose-coloured fabric that lightens up the room.

Arguably the most noticeable aspect of the refit can be seen in the Observation Lounge, which sports new wood display cases, wall panelling, and a brand-new bar topped with classy marble.

Take a look at the newly-refurbished Silver Whisper and see for yourself why this ship, built in 2000, is still as classy as the day she entered service 17 years ago:
